How to summon anyone, anytime

I believe there is a Universal Law of Post-It Recall.

In the event you don’t find someone at their desk, the natural thing
to do is start leaving a post-it for them.

Invariably, this involves scrabbling around for such items and begging
nearby desks for a pen.

Of course, the moment you finish your note, the person magically
appears, rendering your writing effort redundant.

I’ve often thought that this magical power could be put to good use.
Someone should pop round to Lord Lucan’s house and start writing him a
post-it.

Barcelona v Real Madrid 1997

Photo

Found this old ticket that I’d been using as a bookmark and it brought back memories.

I’d been visiting friends Steve and Liz in Spain and Steve & I tried to get tickets for the match. I remember Bobby Robson saying that he’d seen all the big derbies – Glasgow/Celtic, Tottenham/Arsenal and Boca Juniors/River Plate but that none compared to Barcelona v Real Madrid.

We paid a whopping £100 per ticket to a tout (Steve – I’m finally shopping you to Liz) and headed in.

And it was truly mad. People were in our seats, but no-one sat anyway and once they heard I’d come from England for this match, I was hugged like a long lost brother.

The capacity of the Nou Camp was about 120,000 and only 500 fearless Madrid fans made it in. They were barracked mercilessly throughout.

The experience was indeed extraordinary – flares, thrown coins and real animation.

The game itself was decided by a Barcelona penalty. Not the most exciting goal, but it was scored by Ronaldo.

Laid-back Kiwi cricket

I went to watch this test match in New Zealand in March 1997. They were playing Sri Lanka and my lasting memory is how casual the whole thing was. I’d been to Lord’s and the Oval several times by then and this was so laid back by contrast. I remember some guys carrying in a full-size leather sofa to plonk on the grass, but in particular I enjoyed the easy acceptance that kids could carry on their own parallel game of cricket right next to the boundary. Once or twice the ball went onto the playing area, only for the test cricketer to happily toss it back.
