We’ll have a media frenzy this weekend about Raoul Moat being a ‘monster’. It’s comforting to reduce complex situations to a pantomime, but it’s more decent to have compassion than hate.
The murders are truly dreadful and will blight lives for decades. Yet it needn’t detract from solemnly respecting those tragedies to at least consider that this is an sad story in every direction.
This snippet from the BBC report gives a glimpse into the background. He ended up a scary, murderous man, yet you can hear the long-damaged little boy inside:
A guest-house owner, who did not want to be named, told the BBC: “He actually said, the one thing that sticks in my mind, ‘I haven’t got a dad’… and he also said that, ‘nobody cares about me.'”
All the lovely Sally’s work
Ceremonial dumping of tea in symbolic Boston Harbour
I saw this first time round and I have never been as excited about a movie since. The ten year old me ran out of the Huddersfield ABC jabbing and ducking. Looks a bit cheesey now, but only because it was so iconic that it’s been parodied heavily.
