The author’s death prompted me to read this modern classic. Of a similar “dystopian future” era/genre to I am Legend, 1984 and The Man in the High Castle, it’s clearly the fruit of post-war, atomic age fear – a place where the threat of totalitarianism was real and the paranoid witch hunts of McCarthy were in full anger. What a damaging and damaged time that was.
One thought – it could almost be the prequel to one of my favourite books, Ridley Walker by Russell Hoban. But I won’t spoil either by making the connection.
But this is not a misery fest. Nor does it feel like science fiction – it’s just a great novel. File under “why hadn’t I read this before?” I shall read more Ray Bradbury.

A good friend of mine, and Euroguff player, is involved in The Rifti Valley Soccer Academy. Based in the small town of Rongai, Kenya, it’s aim is to provide football coaching to the children from the Rongai slums.
The goal is to provide the children with fun, stop them getting bored and into trouble and to learn good values through teamwork.
If Guffers are level on points after tonight’s final, then the minute of the first goal will come into play. Below is the distribution of predictions across the potential 0-120 minutes. Quite data beautiful isn’t it. Most people by far think the first goal will be in the opening 45 minutes. Only two guffers think the first goal will be in extra time and one miserly radical thinks it’ll be 0-0 after 120 minutes.
